Rosalind -

I used to work with a man who said, "If it's not written down, it never happened." In young naivete, I thought that perspective harsh and wrong. Older, wiser and having run two businesses ... "If it's not written down, it never happened."

And when it comes to clarity of point, we all know what "assuming" does. Great reminder on clear communication and documentation for the important things.

Diana- Couldn't agree more that these are useful in parenting - especially teenagers who can be very concrete and miscommunication w/parent is rampant! Nothing worse than a "he said/she said" with a 16 year old - we all know who doesn't get it "right" :)

Emily - those are great ideas. I have to remember to share them because they really do fill out the commitment.

I totally agree with both of you. This work well in non-work situations as well and especially well with children. It helps them with their listening and following directions skills.

I always try to repeat back what was said, and then say to the other person, "please tell me in your own words what we just agreed to, just to make sure I am understanding correctly." You would be surprised at the number of times that we both said practically the same words but meant different things! I keep this process up until I am sure we both understand exactly what we are taking about...I then verify in writing, because memory changes over time, often to the detriment of one party over another. We each have "filters" that we communicate through and those filters often change the intent from giver to receiver!
