Figuring out whether to talk about your chronic illness to your boss seems to be the top issue that people wonder about. At least that’s what most journalists think. I’ve found that every time I am interviewed, inevitably one of the first questions I’m asked is : Should a person disclose?

areyoutalkingbook150w.jpgThis past weekend, in  The New York Times,  a journalist who often writes about work/life balance, Lisa Belkin, wrote a piece called,  “ I’m Ill but Who Really Needs to Know?”     Starting with Richard Cohen  (Strong in the Broken Places and Blindsided),  Belkin described how four people dealt with disclosure in their career.

Obviously,  I think this is a crucial issue –  or I wouldn’t have written a Guidebook about it.   And, I’m delighted that reporters are writing about the challenges of living with chronic illness and work.

I just wish they’d focus on something other than whether or not people talk about it. Do you think this is your biggest challenge? If not, what is?

(Oh — In case you are wondering about whether to talk, what to say and when, my Guidebook, Are You Talking, will give you the strategies and tactics you need to do this with ease.)
